“Why did you write this book Bat Sheva?”
I get asked this question during nearly every interview or Podcast I do. And for a while I struggled for an answer. The real answer seemed so complicated: to help women, to assure women that they are normal, to give women answers to questions they didn’t even know they had.
And then the real answer hit me: I wrote this book because I had to.
I didn’t have a choice. Weekly I was hearing from women all over the country (and sometimes the world) with frustrations and fears and worries and a terrible sense that they were broken, when I knew they weren’t!!
But they couldn’t all come in as patients. They couldn’t come in because they lived too far away or because they couldn’t afford it or because sometimes, they didn’t have the support of their family or community. Or they just didn’t have the courage yet. And I wanted to help so badly.
So I wrote this book. And if I’m honest, it took 8 years. Ask some of the people in the acknowledgments in the back of the book. I had many, many “false starts.” I had many, many odd detours. I had many days crying on the sofa thinking I couldn’t do it. It was harder than learning to hula hoop, and that’s saying something.
During the process, I bounced ideas off of neighbors, friends and family. Enough that, if they never hear another word about “the book”, they will all probably be relieved.
But in the end, I wrote the book I wanted to. A combination of complicated medical information and complex psychological information broken down into, what I truly hope, is an easy to use, fun to read, helpful guide for women.
All women. Even the ones who may not think that they need a book on sex.
